期待著我和大陸同學進行一場激烈辯論,而我的大陸室友急忙說 "Let's not talk about this sensitive issue."
As voters across Taiwan headed to the polls on Saturday, the public apology from a young pop singer who was accused of being an independence activist after waving the Taiwanese flag, has put the spotlight back on cross-strait relations as a key election issue.
head to: 前往
be accused of: 被指控
put the spotlight on: 聚焦在...
Opposition presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen from the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party, is expected to win the election in a landslide. The DPP could also wrest control of the parliament from the ruling Kuomintang Party for the first time.
win the election in a landslide: 壓倒性勝利 (landslide是倒塌的意思,所以win in a landslide 就是大勝、壓倒性勝利)
wrest control of...from: 從...
The election campaign in Taiwan has been dominated by issues such as affordable housing and pension reform as Taiwan's economy struggled to grow one per cent last year despite the KMT's efforts to forge closer trade and investment ties with China.
However, the furor over Chou Tzu-yu's decision to wave a Taiwanese flag on a television show has catapulted the fraught relationship between Beijing and Taipei into the spotlight.
The South Korea-based pop singer, who is just 16, released a video clip late Friday apologising for waving the flag and insisting she adhered to the "one China" principle.
EX: Twice released a new album.)
Her management company also put out a statement clarifying that Chou has "has never made any remarks in support of Taiwan independence and online rumours that she supports Taiwan independence are groundless."
clarify: 澄清
made remark: 發言
Some analysts said the video of Ms Chou's public apology, in which she read from a prepared statement and appeared visibly shaken, might prompt more people to go out and vote.
While all of the political candidates came out strongly in support of Ms Chou, the controversy is expected to favour the DPP. On social media websites, Taiwanese netizens criticised the KMT-led government for not protecting Ms Chou.
in support of: 支持
