看影集學英文: How I Met Your Mother S1 ep4


I am a journalist.
平常「記者」大家應該都會想到"reporter"，但是英文比較常用的是"journalist"，像是「新聞業」叫做journalism，「新聞系」叫做department of journalism.

(過去式): swore

印象: impression
說到「印象」我們常說的是「第一印象」"first impression"
在這邊Ted 想要去創造一些新的「第二」印象

破產: broke (口語)
有一齣美劇就叫做"Two Broke Girls" 翻譯成「破產姊妹花」

英文說"cry her eyes out" 「哭到眼睛都掉出來了!」我覺得描寫得很生動~~很有趣XD

call it a day: 就到這邊吧!
原本是用工作上，老闆說「今天就工作到這裡，下班吧！」
後來延伸到生活中，要結束一件事情的時候都可以用。

替...辯護: in... defense
defense: 防禦、保衛
ex: 國防部= Military of Defence

in person= face to face 當面、面對面

獸醫: vet 是 veterinarian的縮寫

無法形容: ineffable 
(這是美國人日常也很少用到的單字，所以後面Natalie才會聽不懂)

Well, I think Natalie deserves better.
應得: deserve
這是你應得的! : you deserve it!
你應該得到更好的: you deserve better

 I have to do the mature thing.
成熟: mature
不成熟: immature，也可以說 childish (幼稚)
另外naive 也可以翻譯成幼稚，但是跟「天真」比較接近


Ted, have you considered telling her the truth?

Oh, so dating you is like winning the lottery?! 
中樂透: win the lottery
沒中樂透: lost the lottery
但是! 買樂透不是"buy the lottery" 喔! 
是"buy a lottery ticket" 買彩券~
因為樂透是指這個遊戲~不能買這個遊戲呀! 要買的是彩券~


waited three years for me to get over you, 
情傷之後通常要花點時間將舊情人忘記，
就叫做"get over someone"

What's going on? Did I just have a stroke ?   中風: stroke  我中風了! I have a stroke! You're becoming a long and difficult-to-spell household name . 家喻戶曉: a household name Ex: Lady Gaga has become a household name. Yeah, it's supposed to be incredibly exclusive . 這一句的翻譯跟原文不太搭 exclusive 的意思在這邊是 "排外的，只有特定人士才能參加" 所以他才會說 "有位朋友在外面兩小時，還是不能進去" (見下圖) 所以這句話的意思其實是: 這間夜店應該只有特定人士才能去!   I don't know, I just felt embarrassed . 感到丟臉: feel embarrassed Let's do it. Let's rock it. Maturity style . 成熟: mature 幼稚: immature   Somebody spilled gorgeous all over it. Lily 在這邊把gorgeous的詞性拿來玩了一下~ gorgeous 是" 形容詞 " 可以用來形容人很帥、很正，也可以用來形容一個地方非常美麗、豪華、很棒等等 但是 Lily在這裡把gorgeous 當成" 名詞 " 使用 說: 「有人把gorgeous 倒在你身上了!!」 其實意思就是: "You look gorgeous!"  pairing them up with these cool gourmet cheeses. 非常美味的: gourmet (t不發音)   Wow, who knew being in a committed heter...

This much fun is good. It's safe. It's guaranteed . 保證: guarantee You're in a rut. And I am a rut-buster. I'm going to bust your rut. 一成不變的事：rut 弄壞、打破: bust (Barney 說他是 "rut-buster" 是說他要當打破Ted的常規的那個人) 有看過飛哥與小佛的朋友可能常聽到 busted! 這個字 飛哥的姐姐Candace 每次都想要讓她的弟弟們「倒大楣」，她的英文其實是說要揭露她弟弟們的事情，要 bust them ! It's not a rut, okay? It's a routine , and I like it. 例行事項: routine two handsome international businessmen just back from a lucrative trip to Japan. 賺錢的: lucrative  Now you can either put the bags on the carousel now, or you can listen to me give you a really long speech convincing you to put the bags on the carousel. 行李輸送帶: carousel 說服: convince either...or : 這個...或那個 (二選一)  (複習一下either...or 句型) Follow them.
